Claude P. Dettloff, "Wait For Me, Daddy"
1940
l chose this image because to me it represents love in the face of adversity. This photo was taken on October 1st, 1940, as lines of Canadian soldiers marched off to fight in the Second World War. Warren Bernard, the young boy in the picture, is calling out to his father to hold his hand one last time before he leaves. This photo is so incredibly impactful because it has captured such a personal moment. This could be the last time this soldier ever sees his family, but the camera still manages to capture his smile as he switches his rifle into his opposite hand and reaches back to take his sons. Even though he is going off to a place filled with war and destruction and death, he still finds one last moment of joy within the love he has for his family. This idea of love and family in the face of something so terrible is a concept that l think everyone can relate to, and that's what makes this photo so powerful.
