Morgan DiLallo
Sally Mann, "Candy Cigarette"
1989, Toned Gelatin Silver Print
I originally saw this photograph a few years back and it became implanted in my head since then. I find this photo very intriguing yet dark and depressing at the same time. This picture captures a young girl striking a pose of attitude, holding what appears to be a cigarette in her hand. I find this picture powerful first off because I think it has great composition and contrast in the photo. The fact that the photo is black and white is what I believe to truly make the image stand out to me. I see a little girl in a white dress with a radiating halo beaming from her, with darkness surrounding her. The image makes me sad because you see a girl who is holding something so mature and deadly. To me I see the photo as a girl whose innocence glow is slowing starting to fade into the darkness of the adult world.
