Alec Soth, "Looking for Love"
1997
1997
This picture is taken by Photographer Alec Soth. It does not have a name, but is part of a series or album called "Looking for Love" which he made in 1997. Soth is a traveling photographer in a sense where he doesn't like to take a lot of pictures of one specific area. He likes to move around the country and take pictures, and when his funds allow him to, he travels outside of the US, but he is mainly focused in the US. He is known to take pictures of modern America and represent it as it really is, and not as the media claims America to be. The reason I chose this picture is simply because I like it and it inspires me. The houses, trashed lawn, cars, everything about it just appeals to me. It is representing what America is truly like. The media claims America to be this wealthy place with nice cars and beautiful mansions. It isn't. Only a couple parts of America do that, the rest of America is what is seen in this picture. The car has writing on it, the "Ode to Joy" which is a musical masterpiece, yet the picture is of a neighborhood that doesn't look so well off. It's a bit of irony in a sense, where a beautiful piece is mentioned, in a place that is trashed and dirty.
