Gail Harvey, "Companion of the Order of Canada"
1980
Gail Harvey is an award winning film director who started her early career as a photographer. She made this photograph when she was very young and is best know for this image and three others.
Reading Terry Fox's story fascinated me. This man ran uphill, downhill, through rain, and heat with an amputated leg. Having lost his right leg to cancer, Fox was determined to run across Canada to demonstrate that the loss of a leg could be overcome. Fox's face, at the moment the image was made, shows his determination and courage, with the support of the police car behind him, I imagine him saying, "Im going to finish this, and no one is stopping me."
