John Malmin "Untitled
1959

My mother has a book of images that were featured in the Los Angeles times throughout the past decade. John Malmin was a reoccurring photographer who had the opportunity to photograph much of history ranging from small local news to when the Beatles first came here. This image was featured in an issue of the L. A. Times in 1959. John Malmin not only captured a part of the aftermath of a head-on collision but also captured a moment of time. Images as this one remind us that photography is more than its face value. Though it is a still image, you can feel the impact of the collision and hear the shatter of the glass. While the image conveys a clear message of an accident, you can't help but wonder. What caused this? Are the people involved okay? Did the person get their glasses back or get new ones? These are questions I may never get answers to but I find that some of the best images are those that tell a story and yet leave you asking for more.
