Dan Eldon, "Somali children flee"
June 1993
The picture I chose was taken by Dan Eldon. He was a photojournalist who went to Somali in 1992 to document the famine going on there. His pictures were being published worldwide, and the Somali government didn't appreciate the fact that he was making people aware of the atrocities going on. In July of 1993, at the age of 22, Dan and three other journalists were stoned and beaten to death.
I chose this photo because in war, I believe the people who are responsible for air raids can become desensitized to the whole thing. From the sky, they can't see the people they're shelling; they can only see the towns. And this photo shows it in a different perspective. Not only do you see the US Cobra helicopter that just bombed a village, but you also see the victims, who are just children running away from their homes.
